Tony Oliva hit 2 homers and Jim Perry pitched 6 strong innings as the Twins held on to defeat the Brewers. The Twins took a 4-0 lead into the bottom of the 7th, but the Brewers bats came to life as Bando, Yount, and Lezcano all doubled to plate 2. Tom Burgmeier got Cecil Cooper to pop out to end the threat, but the Brewers scored again in the 8th to get within 1. Twins closer Bill Campbell had to come on to squelch the rally. The Twins followed up with 2 runs on 4 hits in the top of the 9th and Campbell finished up the game as the Twins held on for their 4th win in a row.

Game 2 Mil 5 Min 0 (Slaton vs Kaat)

All 5 runs in the game were scored in the top of the 5th, as the Brewers sent 9 batters to the plate and used 3 walks and 3 hits to score their runs. Jim Slaton pitched 7 scoreless innings, allowing only 5 hits to the Twins (and 5 walks). Tom Murphy pitched scoreless 8th and 9th innings to close  out the game.

Game 3 Min 5 Mil 4 (Blyleven vs Sorensen)

The Brewers drew first blood in the top of the 1st, as Lezcano led off with a double, Cooper singled him to 3rd, and Money doubled home a run. With runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, Blyleven was in some serious trouble. However, he struck out George Scott and Gorman Thomas, then induced a fly out from John Briggs to end the threat. The Twins immediately struck back with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, then 2 more in the 2nd. Blyleven headed into the 9th with a 3 run lead, bidding for a complete game, and quickly got 2 outs before tiring. The Brewers George Scott singled home 2 runs to shrink the lead to 1, and the game came down to Bill Campbell vs Gorman Thomas with the tying tun on 1st. Campbell struck out Thomas, as the Twins held on for their 5th win in 6 games. Blyleven struck out 11 in earning his 4th win, Killebrew hits his 5th homer, and Rod Carew upped his average to .361 with his second 2-hit game of the series.

Week 5 - Cincy takes 2 of 3 from Bucs

GAME 1
Gullet vs. Blass
An ESPN Instant Classic for sure.......Blass only last 1 2/3 innings as the Cincy bats take off.  Cincy jumps to an early 5-2 lead only to see the Bucs battle back and tie the game.  The game heads into extra innings when Cincy pulls it out in 11.  The Pirates used 7 pitchers in the losing effort.  The Reds were paced by Perez, Morgan, and Rose who all homered.  Cincy wins 7-6.
GAME 2
Ellis vs. Nolan
Dock Ellis Pitches a strong 7 innings and giving up only two runs.  He also contributes at the plate by going 2-3 with 3 RBIs.  Richie Hebner knocks in 3 himself as the Bucs bats come alive.  Pirates win 9-4.  Rose goes 3-5 with another HR in a losing effort.
GAME 3
Reuss vs. Seaver
Another ESPN Classic.....as Seaver pitches 8 strong innings giving up only 2 runs to earn his 4th win.  Bench, needing a rest at catcher, was replaced by Bill Plummer.  The Reds didn't miss a beat as Plummer proceeds to step to the plate with one on in the bottom of the 6th and his Reds tied 2-2.  Plummer proceeds to smash his 1st HR of the year and puts the Reds up to stay.  Plummer goes 2-3 with a HR and 2 RBIs.  Hall saves the ninth for the Reds who hold on for a 4-3 win to take the series 2 games to one.

Dodgers take 2 of 3 from Redbirds

Game One: Dodgers 3, Cardinals 1
Claude Osteen improved to 3-0 spinning a nifty 6 hitter over eight innings as the Dodgers bested St. Louis and Bob Gibson 3-1 in the opener of a three-game interdivision series. Gibson surrendered only 5 hits, but three of those came back to back to back in the 8th as Manny Mota, Davey Lopes and Willie Davis all singled, Davis’ hit driving in Mota to break a 1-1 tie, followed by Steve Garvey’s sac fly. Jim Brewer pitched a scoreless 9th to notch his 4th save.

Game Two: Dodgers 3, Cardinals 2
The Cardinals got a step closer in this one, but lefty Doug Rau had enough runs to work with to keep the Dodgers in it, before they rallied late from a 2-0 deficit to earn the win. Reggie Cleveland surrendered 10 hits, but his defense turned two double plays and he was able to get out of jams better than he created them.
Solo home runs by Joe Torre and Ted Simmons had given the Cardinals their lead going into the last of the seventh, when Bill Russell’s two out RBI single tied it, and then he won it in the 9th doubling home Bill Buckner, again with 2 outs.

Game Three: Cardinals 7, Dodgers 5
The teams got some offense going in this one, and it looked like the Dodgers would sweep the three game set entering the 8th inning with a 5-3 lead. But the Cardinals got one back in the eighth, and then Lou Brock electrified the home crowd with a three run home run in the bottom of the ninth to steal away a victory. It was one of three hits for Brock, and his first homer. The game took the thunder away from Dodger third baseman Ron Cey’s big day, as the Penguin had 3 hits himself good for 12 total bases (2 homers, a triple and a single), and drove in all 5 Dodger runs.

O's take 2 of 3 from Pale Hose

GAME 1 - O's 4, Chisox 3 - Tied 3-3 and heading into the top of the ninth Baltimore needed something big to happen and Ken Singleton delivered a solo shot to make it four - three O's.   Grant Jackson came to close it out in the bottom of the ninth and pitched a perfect inning to notch the save, as the Baltimore Orioles won a close one in Comiskey.

GAME 2 - Chisox 5, O's 4 - Another nailbiter, this time favoring the pale hose, headed into the bottom of the ninth tied it up for four all.  All of the action started with with two outs as Pat Kelly singled and  Jerry Hairston walked to put runners on first and second.  Jorge Orta delivered an RBI single for a  walk off win off of Tippy Martinez who came on in relief of Denny Martinez (no relation) in the 8th.

GAME 3 - O's 6, Chisox 1 - The rubber match of the series was very much anti-climactic as the Orioles won easily 6-1 pounding out 12 hits.  Chisox starter Stan Bahnsen was barely effective effective in four innings for the for the Southsiders, while Mike Cuellar went the distance giving up just one run on three hits in nine innings of work for the O's.  Dick Allen hit a solo homerun for the losing team while Baltimore featured a balanced attack.  4 Oriole players had 2 or more hits with Brooks Robinson going three for four with two RBIs and playing his usual gold glove defense at the hot corner.

Phightin's sweep Stros

GAME 1 - Shockingly 20 runs was scored today in the Astrodome as the Phillies came out ahead 12 to 8 paced by the harty bat of Mike Schmidt who went four for six with four RBIs.  Jay Johnstone also went three for five and he had three RBIs and chalked up his  first homerun of year.  Larry Christenson got the win giving up four runs over seven innings, but that was good enough for victory on a day where offense was on the menu.

GAME 2 - For the second day in a row the Astrodome saw double-digit scoring.  This time the Astros actually had themselves a 5-3 lead going into the top of the seventh when Philly exploded for four runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to walk away with a 10 to 5 win.  Astro starter Dave Roberts give up three runs in six innings but the bullpen letting down as Philadelphia banged out 17 hits, including three-hit days from Bake McBride and Greg Luzinski.  Strangely nobody hit any homeruns in a game where 15 runs crossed the plate.

GAME 3 - The series shifted to Philadelphia but the results were the same.  The Phillies won once again, sweeping the series, this time it was a low-scoring affair. The Phightins' scored four runs over the first 3 frames to salt away the victory.  Jay Johnstone paced the offense going two for four with two runs scored and two RBIs.  Johnstone also hit his second homerun of the season.  Michael Jack Schmidt also hit his second homer of the season and if he ever heats up boy is the rest of the NL East in trouble.

Jints take 2 of 3 from Bucs

Giants win 2 of 3 from the Pirates. Games 1 & 2 had 54 hits combined. Pirates hurled up a gem in game 3 to cool off the HOT giants. Bill Madlock went 5 for 6 in game 1 and then 4 for 4 in game 3 to raise his avg to .407.  The great Willie Mays finally hit his first homer of the season, but is still hitting below .200.

Twins sweep faltering Bosox

Game 1: Twins 4, Red Sox 1 (Kaat vs Culp)
Boston drew first blood in the top of the 1st as a George Scott single sandwiched by two Kaat walks gave the Sox a 1-0 lead. The Twins fot the run back in the 3rd on a Cesar Tovar single. In the 4th, the Twins took a 2-run lead as Culp surrendered 3 singles and 2 walks. A struggling Harmon Killebrew added a solo shot in the 5th to close out the scoring. Twins fireman Bill Campbell came on in the 8th and retired 5 of the 6 batters he faced to preserve the win. Jim Kaat lowered his ERA on the year to 2.13 and picked up win #2 In a strong outing.

Game 2: Twins 14, Red Sox 7 (Goltz vs Siebert)
The Twins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the 1st behind 4 singles and a walk. After the two sides each scored one in the next 2 innings, the Twins broke the game wide open in the 5th. The Twins sent 10 batters to the plate as they lit up Siebert for 4 hits, 4 walks, and a hit batter to plate 7 runs. While Goltz held Boston scoreless in the 6th and 7th, the Twins added 3 more runs to take a 14-2 lead. Things got a little tense in the Boston 8th, as the Red Sox bats came to life. After 2 Sox singles, Goltz was replaced by lefty Geoff Zahn. Zahn allowed the 2 inherited runners to score and then 3 more as he surrendered 6 hits in only 2/3 of an inning. Ray Corbin then came on to strike out George Scott to end the Red Sox threat, and after a scoreless 9th the Twins got the win. Killebrew, Lyman Bostock, and Rod Carew all had 3 hits for the Twins.

Game 3: Twins 3, Red Sox 1 (Blyleven vs Lee)
Going for the sweep, the Twins sent ace Bert Blyleven to the mound against The Spaceman. In the top of the 1st, the Twins scored 3 powered by homers from the bats of Larry Hisle and Eric Soderholm. The Red Sox countered with a run in the bottom of the inning as a Carlton Fisk sac fly scored Yaz. It was starting to look like another slugfest. However, the remainder of the game was scoreless as both hurlers settled in nicely. Blyleven went 7, striking out 6, then yielded to Bill Campbell. Campbell pitched scoreless 8th and 9th innings to pick up his 3rd save as Blyleven recorded win #3. Rod Carew upped his avg to .350 with another 2 hit game.

Tribe takes 2 of 3 from AL West leading Royals

Indians 6, Royals 5
Eckersley vs Leonard
Dennis Eckersley saw his six run lead evaporate, when Kansas City scored three big ones in the bottom of the seventh to make it a 6-5 game. Cleveland needed to lean on their bullpen heavily over the final for 2 1/3 innings. Tom Buskey, Dave LaRoche and Jim Kern shut the door on Kansas City not letting them score the the tying run. Jim Kern pitched a scoreless ninth-inning two notch his league leading fifth save of the campaign.  Andre Thornton was the hitting star for Cleveland today, going three for four with three runs scored, two RBIs via two home runs and double.

Royals 9, Indians 0
Waits vs Splittorff

Game 2 was a complete washout for the Cleveland Indians.  Kansas City had a one nothing lead heading into the bottom of the six when the exploded for five big runs.  KC added three in the bottom the seventh to walk away with a 9-0 whitewash. Paul Splittorff went the distance and got his first win of the year.  "Splitts" was on his "A" game and cruised to a tidy 5hit shutout.  Hal McRae and Al cowens each hit their first homers of the season for KC.

Indians 11, Royals 5
Busby vs Bibby

On a day where both offenses combined for 21 hits and 16 runs, the true hero of the day was reliever Steve Dunning, who came on in the fifth inning to replace Jim Bibby and pitched five scoreless innings to keep the Royals at bay.  The Indians were able to pad their lead and walk away with a nice six run victory despite Darrell Porter's 3-3 day and homerun in a losing effort. Oscar Gamble swung the hot bat for the Tribe, knocking in five and hitting a tape measure shot.

Expos Sweep Friars to move over .500

Game 1 - Jack Murphy Stadium
Bill Stoneham vs Dave Friesleben
Expos 15, Padres 1

Montréal walked all over San Diego in this one sided contest. Bill Stoneham had a shutout going for six and third innings until he tired. Don Carrithers carried the load over the next 2 2/3 innings.  Dave Friesleben had an awful day for San Diego giving up 11 runs, five of them earned, in six innings. Montréal knocked out 13 hits with nobody having more than two.  San Diego barely had five hits.  The Padres finally scored a run in the top and bottom of the ninth to break the shutout up.  Gary Carter, Mike Jorgensen and Ron Fairly all went deep.  Fairly hit his 3rd of the season, while Kid & Jorgy notched their first.

Game 2 - Jack Murphy Stadium
Steve Renko vs Bob Shirley
Expos 8, Padres 0

Game two was scoreless until the top of the fifth when Ron Hunt singled home Bob Bailey.  It stayed a one run game until the top the seventh when Montréal exploded for five runs off of embattled Padre starter Bob Shirley.  Montréal would cruise to victory with Steve Renko going the distance giving up only five hits and not allowing run to record the complete game shutout. Not only was Renko dominant on the hill, he was also quite handy with the lumber, going 3 for 5 with a run scored.  3rd baseman Larry Parrish also had 3 hits including a homer.

Game 3 - Olympique Stadium
Fred Norman vs Carl Morton
Expos 2, Padres 0

Game number three was a classic pitchers duel.  Both Fred Norman and Carl Morton kept the game scoreless until the bottom of sixth when Montréal got two runs on Ellis Valentine's clutch 2 out double.  That was all the Expos would need, because San Diego was unable to score any runs the rest of the way.  Morton would tire in the ninth and Mike Marshall come on and get the final two outs and notch his third save of the season.  In the series the Expos scored 25 runs.  San Diego was only capable scoring one run throughout the entire series.  Poor Fred Norman pitched his tail off and had zero chance of winning once Andre Dawson and Ron Hunt crossed the plate in the 6th.

Bombers take broom to Rangers

Game 1 – Medich vs Perry

The start of the series in Texas looked like it would be a pitching duel between Don Medich and Gaylord Perry.  In the first five innings the teams combined for no runs and three hits.  Mickey Rivers opened the sixth with a 343-foot solo home run but Perry got a fly-out and two popups to finish the inning. In the bottom of the inning Toby Harrah walked to open the inning and Jim Spencer drove him home with a triple, and then scored himself on a ground-ball out to the second baseman. No one else would reach base. Graig Nettles tied the game in the seventh with his seventh home run of the season, and then New York took the lead on an RBI single from Rivers. Medich gave way to Sparky Lyle in the eighth Lyle would only allow one walk. He faced seven batters and retired six of them, including a perfect ninth. New York pulls out a 3-2 win.

Game 2 – Hunter vs Alexander

Jim “Catfish” Hunter started the game for New York and it was not an auspicious start as he would only last four and two-thirds innings. Fortunately for the Yankees their bats would make up the difference. Bump Wills gave the Rangers a 2-1 lead in the third with a two out, two run homer, only to have the Yankees tie the game on an RBI double from Willie Randolph.  The Rangers got three in the bottom of the fourth on three hits and a sac fly and Hunter was clearly in trouble. A Jim Hargrove home run in the fifth made is 6-5 and a walk to Toby Harrah finished Hunter’s night. Dick Tidrow came in and stopped the bleeding, getting Harrah to fly out to center to end the inning. Tidrow would go on to pitch three and a third, and while he would allow four hits and two walks none of them scored. Jim Shellenback came in to pitch the seventh for Texas hoping to hold the slim lead. Instead Graig Nettles and Chris Chambliss hit back-to-back jacks and Willie Randolph made an RBI single to score four runs in the inning. A double by Mickey Rivers in the eighth chased Shellenback, and Rivers would score on a Reggie Jackson single that was compounded by an error by Jeff Burroughs.  The Yankees would tack on a run in the ninth to leave no doubt and they won the game 11-6 for their tenth win of the season.

Game 3 – Bibby vs Guidry

The series returned to New York with Ron Guidry on the mound to face the Rangers’ Jim Bibby. A two-RBI double by Frank Howard greeted Guidry rudely in the first. The Yankees would score in the second on a Bucky Dent RBI single, but Bibby held firm. With Guidry straightening things out, the game went into the eighth with a 2-1 Texas lead. The Rangers loaded the bases in the eighth but Guidry survived the inning with only one run coming across, leaving two men on. Horacio Pina came on to pitch for Texas and the floodgates opened. Graig Nettles would open the inning with his ninth homer (3rd in successive games) but it looked like Pina would get out of it after two quick outs. Unfortunately for the Rangers Pina would not retire another hitter. Before he was pulled, Pina allowed three more hits and a walk, Roy White would plate two on a single with the bases loaded, and Bobby Murcer would provide the coup-de-grace with his first home run, a two-run shot that sent Pina to the showers. In all six runs scored in the Yankee eighth. Sparky Lyle came in in a non-save situation in the ninth and gave up one hit, which he left stranded on first. The Yankees would complete the sweep winning 7-3 to go to 11-3 on the year. Next up for New York is the White Sox, while the Rangers face Detroit.

Week 4 - Brew Crew take 2 of 3 from A's

Game 1 - Ken Holtzman takes the mound for the Oakland A's to face Lary Sorenson, who takes the mound for the recently swept Milwaukee Brewers. Top of the second, Gorman Thomas gets a one out triple. John Briggs is the next batter and drives in Thomas to give the Brewers a 1-0 lead.To the sixth inning we go, and Sorenson is still throwing a no hitter until Joe Rudi comes up to bat. Its a base hit, and there goes Sorensons no hitter. That there is it...both pitchers throw complete games. Holtzman only gives up 5 hits and throws a gem, however he just happen to be facing Sorenson who threw the game of his career. A one hitter for Sorenson and a 1-0 victory.

Game 2 - Milwaukee gets out of the gate early and opens up with a 1-0 lead after 1.  Oakland gets the bats going in the second racking up 3 runs to take a 3-1 lead.  Nothing happens until the top of the 5th. Don Money hits a 2 run shot to tie up the game at 3.  To the ninth we go..still tied up at 3 after 9...to extra innigs it is.  10th, 11th, 12th, 13th we go. Bottom of the 13th, Dave Duncan, who had come in the game in the 12th inning, gets a big hit to drive in the winning run. 4-3 victory for Oakland to tie the series at 1 game apiece.

Game 3 - The scoring came early as Oakland scores 1 in the first, 1 in the second, and 2 in the third, but Milwaukee was able to take advantage of the hitting atmosphere too as they score 2 in the second, 2 in the third, and 1 in the 4th, to take a 5-4 lead after 4. Travers settles down after the third inning and is able to go 7.2 innings. Segui is pulled after 5 innings. He only allows 6 hits, but he couldnt seem to find the plate as he walks 7 batters.  The brew crew adds an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th inning.  Castro comes in for .2 innings to record the hold then hands the ball over to Ken Sanders who closes out the game and earn the save to give the Brewers a 6-4 win, and win the series 2-1.

A's take 2 of 3 from Red Sox

GAME 1 - Segui vs. Siebert

The Oakland A's gave starter Diego Segui a 3-0 lead in Fenway against Sonny Siebert.  Boston cut the lead to 3-2 on a 2 Run HR by Butch Hobson off of reliever Paul Abbott who had replaced Segui.  It remained that way until the 8th when Boston erupted for 4 Runs, 3 of those coming on a 3 Run Homer by Game MVP Butch Hobson off of Dave Hamilton.  Siebert gave up a run in the 9th as Bert Campaneris Tripled & scored on a groundout.  Bill Campbell came on to close it out for Boston getting his 1st Save of the season as Boston wins at home 6-4.

GAME 2 - Hunter vs. Lee

The A's got to starter Bill Lee as he lasted only 4.1 IP's allowing 6 Runs on 6 Hits and 4 Walks.  Sal Bando hit a 2 Run Shot in the 2nd and then he drove in 2 more in the 5th putting the A's up 6-4 and sending Lee to the showers.  Boston got one back on another HR by Butch Hobson off of starter Catfish Hunter to make it 6-5 after 7.  With Jim Willoughby on in relief for Boston, Claudel Wahington took him deep to put the A's up 7-5 in the 8th.  The Fenway Faithful were on their feet in the 9th as the Sox got singles by Denny Doyle and Freddy Lynn off of Hunter.  The A's went to Darrold Knowles to face Yaz but George Scott pinch hit and drove in a run with a Single to make it 7-6.  With Lynn on 3rd and Scott on 1st with 2 outs, the A's brought in Rollie Fingers to face the "pre-season predicted hitting star" Jim Ed Rice.  Fingers worked Rice to a 1 & 2 count and then reared back and threw a fastball by Rice looking to get his 2nd Save of the season.  Rice went 0 for 5 with 3 K's and now is hitting .220 on the season as the A's take Game 2 7-6 in Fenway.

GAME 3 - Tiant vs. Blue

In a classic 1970's pitching duel in Oakland, Vida Blue goes the distance pitching 9 strong allowing just 4 Hits and 1 Run to the Sox offense while Striking Out 5!  Luis Tiant matched Blue "pitch for pitch" as he completed the game as well going 8 strong giving up 6 Hits and 4 Walks while Striking Out 8.  Both teams got a run in the 3rd as Blue intentionally walked Jim Rice to load the bases and then walked George Scott unintentionally as Carlton Fisk scored.  The A's got theirs when Billy Noth Singled, stole 2nd, and Campy Singled scoring North as Campy went to 2nd.  Campaneris then stole 3rd, Reggie Jackson was intentionally walked, as Sal Bando walked too.  Mitchell Page came up against Tiant with the sacks jammed but Tiant reared back and K'd him to end the rally and keep it deadlocked at 1-1. The A's pushed the winning run across in the 5th when Campy Singled and Carlton Fisk was charged with a Passed Ball as Campy went to 2nd.  Joe Rudi got an infield Single sending Campy to 3rd with 1 out.  Reggie Jackson then lined a solid Single into left center as Campy scored and that's all she wrote as the A's take 2 of 3 from Boston! --submitted by David Ashe--

Motown sweeps Twinkies

Game 1 at Tiger Stadium  August 26
Mickey Lolich (who through the 1st no hitter in KOD History) tosses his second consecutive shutout and wins his third of the season as the Tigers won their 3rd game of the season.  To date the Tigers have captured the opener in each series and then lost the rest.  The Fat Man gave up only 4 hits, striking out 6 and walking 1.  Norm Cash hit his second homer of the season and Al Kaline drove home 2. Tigers 4  Twins 0

Game 2 at Tiger Stadium, August 27
Each team scored a run in the first.  Harmon Killebrew homered off Joe Coleman in the 4th, his 2nd, but the Twins' offense ended there.  Ron LeFlore led the Tiger offense, going 3 for 4, scoring three runs and stealing two bases..  Lou Whitaler and Rusty Staub each drove home two.  Joe Coleman got his first win of the season and with relief help from John Hiller.  Tigers 4  Twins 2

Game 3  at The Metrodome  August 28
Two Tigers took the field with something to prove and both made themselves heard.  Jack Morris had made three relief appearances but had been passed over in the rotation in the previous two series.  He started for the Tigers and showed management how foolish they were by tossing a 4 hit shutout.  Although he also walked three, he was never in danger as the Twins only had a runner on second twice during the game and om;y one reached third.  Al Kaline also was carrying a small chip on his shoulder over having been benched in the previous game.  Buy against Geoff Zahn. the Twins lefthander, he started.  Al Kaline responded with two homers, 4 hits and three rbis.  Willie Horton also had two hits and an rbi in a rare start.  Tigers 4  Twins 0
